For walkers and lovers of wildly beautiful coastal country: two cosy old cottages and a bright, modern renovation in a cluster with others

Read guest comments

Unwind in this secluded spot close to Hartland Abbey and a superb stretch of the South West Coast Path. Come for silence and hooting owls, for fresh Atlantic air and starry skies. Wander through ancient woodland to Hartland, head for Hartland Quay, for a high-tide swim below gigantic cliffs and a pint at The Wreckers Retreat. Return to gaze out to the sea beyond the tower of St Nectan's church, soak and steam in the spa room or hunker down by the wood-burner.

Children run free in the play area and love helping to feed the chickens and ducks. Stroll with them down to Hartland Abbey House and gardens, Docton Mill gardens too are lovely - so are their cream teas. You'll find barbecues outdoors and sunsets are often stunning.

Explore steeply cobbled Clovelly, and Lundy Island - a helicopter hop from the Point or a boat trip from Bideford. Kind owners live next door and if you want a wider family get-together there are other cottages.

Local points of interest from Annie Shillito:

Punti d'interesse locali da
Annie Shillito:

  • One of the most beautiful and dramatic stretches of the 630-mile South West Coast Path runs close by (about a 20-minute walk away) and we’re in a great spot for walkers to complete the sections from Westward Ho! to Bude
  • The beach at Hartland Quay is brilliant for rock-pooling, with sand at low tide. Other beaches on the Peninsula are wilder, wonderfully craggy and trickier to get to. For vast stretches of sand head south for SandyMouth and Bude, north to Northam
  • Hartland with its pubs, café, small shops and potteries is a 30-minute cross-country walk away. You can walk too to Pattard Restaurant, our nearest gastro-eatery. And in the extraordinary setting of Hartland Quay is the friendly Wreckers Retreat pub
  • Visit nearby Hartland Abbey and Gardens (open April-Sept) - and walk through the grounds and bluebell woods to the sea. Nearby Docton Mill Gardens are charming too and the RHS garden at Rosemoor is inspirational , as is Tapely Park, near Instow
  • The Burton Art Gallery in Bideford has the Ackland and Edwards Collection (the artists Judith Ackland and Mary Stella Edwards spent much time painting in the Cabin at Bucks Mills) and the Bideford Heritage Collection (and a good café).
  • 30-or so miles of the Tarka Trail between Braunton and Meeth are open to cyclists. The trail runs on disused railway tracks and provides a safe and pretty easy-going route through the North Devon countryside.

"Me, my husband and our German Shepard had an absolutely fantastic stay in these lovely cottages. Annie and her husband was the kindest and most helpful hosts and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The scones and clotted cream as a welcome made the start feel so special. It is so easy to walk to town and around. We did some stunning walks and they even drove us to make certain journey easier. Got to say hi to their beautiful pigs and ended the nights with hot sauna, jacuzzi and wine by the fireplace. An absolute blizz. Looking forward to go back!"

"We had a wonderfully relaxing stay for 5 nights in April with one of the warmest welcomes we have ever received. Still warm fresh baked scones and clotted cream, fresh cut flowers and Annie was most helpful in recommending places to visit and what do do. The cottages were stunning and it was a truly blissful stay in a beautiful part of Devon. Myself, my 6 months pregnant girlfriend and Springer Spaniel will certainly be back! We can't recommend it enough."

"Our stay at the Milky Parlour was delightful! We were warmly welcomed by Annie who took her time to recommend some places for us to visit. The sitting room is very cosy and warm, with its log fire, the bedrooms very comfortable. There is a terrace overlooking the endless garden that, if you are lucky, will offer you a breathtaking view of the sunset. We had such a lovely time walking along the coastline and saw stunning places thanks to Annie’s great knowledge of the area. We cannot wait to come back!"
