A babbling brook, the sound of birdsong and centuries of history steeped into the walls of this medieval barn, plus a heated indoor pool

Read guest comments

Sitting in a large garden with peaceful meadow and valley views, this converted medieval stone and thatch barn brings contemporary comfort to rustic charm.

Inside, an open-plan living area under young-oak beams has comfy sofas, an electric wood-burner style fire and a handmade Shaker kitchen. Two bedrooms – one a king, the other a twin – have en-suite limestone bathrooms, and there’s a sofa bed if you need it. The friendly owners have kitted it out with everything you need – from boogie boards, crab lines and buckets and spades to board games and DVDs.

The heated indoor pool is a treat – glass bifold doors lead out to raised decking with views over the gardens and orchard. Kids will get a kick out of the playground with swings and a climbing frame, and there’s plenty of space to run wild or play hide and seek among the trees. And as if it couldn’t get more idyllic – a babbling brook winds through the garden (pooh sticks anyone?).

"Outstanding accommodation, beautiful setting, warmest welcome. Cannot recommend highly enough. Took two children (5 and 7) and one dog. All the family settled in straight away and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Such a quiet and relaxing setting, a short drive from some fantastic, dog-friendly towns. Could happily return time and time again."

"We visited for a short break at the beginning of November (our third visit). Grimpstonleigh worked its magic yet again offering a restful and luxurious space to return to after walks along the coast and trips to Salcombe and Totnes. You are made to feel truly welcome from the start with a welcome pack of organic fruit and veg and bread delivered by the local baker, not to mention the apple juice made by Kevin with apples from the orchard. We could happily have spent the whole time at Cider Barn resting by the beautiful pool and delighting in the 33 degree temperature swims."

"Fabulous accommodation in a wonderful setting/location. This was our second visit to Lower Grimpstonleigh and we have booked again for summer 2016. Cider Barn is wonderfully equipped and the welcome hamper/freshly baked bread on arrival is a lovely gesture (the shortbread is delicious). The icing on the cake is the FABULOUS heated indoor pool with views down the valley. The owners are so welcoming and have thought of everything. If you book a holiday at Lower Grimpstonleigh you will definitely want to return time and time again. We love it."

"We had a fabulous weekend: every detail had been thought of...with a delicious hamper on arrival, classical music playing, dvd's for the boys and their own swimming robes! The pool is equal to that of a smart boutique hotel and we seemingly had it to ourselves, perfect once we were tired from beach trips etc. beautiful walks from the door, a stream to wallow in and even a playground too. Top marks- we highly recommend!"

"Brilliant. We've stayed 4 times; Every one relaxing, pampered and special. On our last trip the new pool was ready - just perfect! Cider barn is great for families - with a bedroom at each end. Our daughters love having a room of their own that they share. The attention to detail, fittings and little touches are the best we have seen in many years of self catering with kiddies. Love it!"
