A smooth, contemporary space with far-reaching views, plenty of light and high ceilings for nature lovers, walkers, artists and dreamers

Walking into this converted barn instantly lifts your spirits. You're in one huge room with a shower off it, and everything is in here - bed, sofa, little kitchen, but it doesn't feel hugger mugger at all, instead it is ordered, calm and rather swish. The beautifully-made bed has feather pillows and duvet, the fabric blinds are thick, you'll find bath robes, home produced organic soap and fresh flowers from the garden.

You're on the owners' 17th-century farm and there's another holiday barn - but if you go out of your back door you can't see anybody and nobody can see you. Lovely to sit out here birdwatching or chatting with a glass of wine while you barbecue supper and admire the sunset and the views over to Dorset and Somerset. Ask Alice about buying their homegrown meat and charcuterie - they also have a mate with a micro-brewery called Gyle 59 nearby and can organise tastings on a neighbouring farm.

Walking is sublime, either at the coast or inland for hilly strolls.

Punti d'interesse locali da
Hugo & Alice Shuttleworth:

  • Bottle Farm sits at the foot of Lambert's Castle, a National Trust hill fort that rises over the Marshwood Vale with spectacular views to the sea. Walk on down to the beach at Charmouth if you are feeling energetic!
  • We make organic charcuterie on the farm. Try some Devon salami or culatello while sipping sparkling wine made by friends down the road, or a beer from the microbrewery which is just visible on the farm across the valley.
  • Bridport's bustling Saturday market is a great place to spend the morning - sipping coffee, checking out the antique and vintage quarter and soaking up its laid back atmosphere.
  • Alice used to lead walking trips in Patagonia and off the beaten tracks of Spain. Now she is an expert on local walking routes and will happily show you where to go whether you want a gentle stroll or a serious hike.
  • East Devon is a foodie hotspot - do a cookery course at River Cottage or Trill Farm, visit local vineyards and try a supper club or restaurant. We are happy to point you in the right direction for some hidden gems.
  • Go on a fishing trip with Harry May down at Lyme Regis, or hire a little motor boat from Simon at Beer and try your hand at catching some mackerel for the barbecue. At Charmouth you can learn to paddle board - or hunt for fossils on the beach.
