A welcoming, warming inn for locals and visitors alike with a blazing log fire, excellent local and seasonal food and proper Devon ales

The chef likes to fill the gap between pub grub and gastro food: Devon beef and jail ale pie, torched Looe sardines on toast, Devon venison burger, all served in the informal restaurant, the cosy bar or in the big garden in summer. There's a new outdoor bar here so you don't have to traipse in and out, a big stretch tent for shelter and views over the medieval castle next door. The background noise is just birdsong.

Bedrooms are in the main house or in the cottage across the lane. They are tasteful, clean and restful and all have en suite bathrooms - the biggest has a roll top bath in the room - but everybody gets Bramley lotions, a jug of fresh milk each morning and homemade shortbread biscuits. Breakfast is unhurried and you choose from a wholesome buffet or a cooked option: porridge with local clotted cream, wild mushrooms on toast, local sausages and bacon, Cornish eggs.

Sample their own gin and lots of local ciders.

Punti d'interesse locali da
Castle Inn:

  • You're 200 metres from the entrance to the National Trust site of Lydford Gorge with the spectacular 30m Whitelady Waterfall and ancient woodland walks.
  • Pop next door to the 13th century Lydford Castle, built as a prison enforcing the local stannary laws. A further wander will take you to the remains of a Norman fort and Lydford Saxon town banks.
  • Lydford is within the Dartmoor National Park and with walks directly from the pub that will take you up tors or down into wooded valleys you'll certainly earn yourself a pint or two!
  • The Market towns of Tavistock and Okehampton are both 15 minutes drive. With Tavistock's ancient pannier market open Tues-Sat and a Farmers Market every 2nd & 4th Saturday and Okehampton's Castle, the largest remains in Devon worth a visit.
  • RHS Rosemoor is a great day trip from the pub, with fantastic gardens to see in every season and a great tea room too!
  • For something a little different why not visit Lydford's furriest inhabitants, Lydford Alpacas! Take a trek with them out onto Dartmoor or visit them and hear about their wonderful characters, Helen is a fantastic host and a font of alpaca knowledge.

Guest feedback
"What a warm and welcoming place. Delicious wood fire smoke in the air and a warm glow from the windows lures you into the bar for a good coffee or a local pint. Bedrooms are serene and comfortable with lots of history within the walls. The food looks great - I hope to bring my family (and dog) with me next time we go walking in this bit of Dartmoor and are in need of a hot meal. Just lovely."
