Views soar up the Jurassic coast all the way to Chesil Beach and on to Portland Bill. It sits high on the hill with one foot in town and the other paddling in the water. Directly below, the Cobb curls into the sea. Outside, there's a sun-trapping garden, where guests fall asleep in deckchairs, then a lookout tower with big sea views for a romantic dinner for two.
Inside, an easy elegance flows: stripped wood floors, windows everywhere, an airy bar for pre-dinner drinks, an attractive sitting room with lots of books. There's a smart breakfast room (delicious continental or full English, smoked salmon with avocado, poached eggs) that could double as a ballroom, then a sun-filled conservatory for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Both offer tasty, local food - perhaps Lyme Bay scallops, chicken with cavolo nero, a white chocolate mousse.
