Tucked in a sheltered hollow beneath the cliff (it's a fairly steep walk from the car park), this part-thatched inn was built in the 13th century and later extended. If only the walls could talk. Or the nooks and crannies, low-beamed ceilings and huge fireplaces – one was said to be the hideout for a renowned local smuggler.
The sea sparkles, tempting you to the Jurassic Coast and its fossil-rich beaches, while only lapping waves, a burbling stream and circling birds disturb your reverie. On sun-splashed days, dine outside at the plentiful garden tables on classic pub menus, and when the weather isn't playing ball, escape inside to a soft sofa beside a wood-burner.
Eight bedrooms up a narrow staircase aren't huge but they're restful with nautical-inspired colours, chunky throws, plump cushions and recently refreshed en suite bathrooms. It's a short stroll to the South West Coast Path. Durdle Door, Weymouth and Dorchester are close.
