Serene, panoramic views from picture windows at this off-grid romantic bolthole in the hills with a cosy wood-burner and local treats

The journey up here is half the adventure, going slow is the key and you should start to wind down as the views get better the higher you climb. Terri and Matthew have created a wonderful cluster of holiday homes on what was once a monastery (there is still an extraordinarily spiritual vibe up here) and then a school for local farmers' children. The history is palpable.

Inside is scrupulously shiny and modern with leather sofas and a big TV screen so if it rains you'll stay cosy inside. The kitchen is sleek with granite work surfaces, space for prepping and a big fridge so you don't have to stock up too often. A thoughtful welcome hamper is full of local treats including Northumberland biscuits, chocolates from Choc Affair in Yorkshire and some English fizz.

Stride the hills along ancient sheep paths, sit in your own garden admiring the views and looking out for red squirrels, or having a barbecue on long summer evenings.

Punti d'interesse locali da
Terri & Matthew Stock:

  • Visit Craigside House! A wonderful day out for the whole family and doggies too. Building camps in the woods, nature trails, kayaking and canoeing on the lake. Beautiful gardens and house full of local history and inventions. Our favourite place to go!
  • For Harry Potter fans! Alnwick Castle is a fantastic day out for all the family. Learn about the history of Alnwick and enjoy the beautiful award-winning gardens created by The Duchess of Northumberland. Activities, concerts and magical fun!
  • Barter Books is one of the biggest second-hand book stores in the country. Great for rainy days. Preserved beautifully it is located in the old Alnwick Train Station. Sit, read and relax with a cuppa in restored waiting rooms with open fires. Dogs welcome
  • Holy Island and the Farne Islands are a great day out. Spot seals and puffins as you travel by boat. Visit the home of Grace Darling, Longstone Light House and find out how her amazing courage inspired the first life boats to patrol our shores.
  • The Star Inn in Harbottle is loved by guests for its warm welcome and is at the heart of our community. You can dine in or pick up a take away on your way back to the cottage. It's dog friendly too so you can take them with you.
  • The Rose and Thistle Pub is just at the bottom of the valley and if you're feeling up to it you can walk there have a Sunday roast and walk back again. Offering a different menu to The Star Inn it is dog friendly and well worth a visit.
