The Hemmel - Self-catering house in Northumberland
Harbottle, Morpeth, NE65 7DA, Northumberland
England,
Regno Unito
The journey up here is half the adventure, going slow is the key and you should start to wind down as the views get better the higher you climb. Terri and Matthew have created a wonderful cluster of holiday homes on what was once a monastery (there is still an extraordinarily spiritual vibe up here) and then a school for local farmers' children. The history is palpable.
Inside is scrupulously shiny and modern with leather sofas and a big TV screen so if it rains you'll stay cosy inside. The kitchen is sleek with granite work surfaces, space for prepping and a big fridge so you don't have to stock up too often. A thoughtful welcome hamper is full of local treats including Northumberland biscuits, chocolates from Choc Affair in Yorkshire and some English fizz.
Stride the hills along ancient sheep paths, sit in your own garden admiring the views and looking out for red squirrels, or having a barbecue on long summer evenings.
