Relaxing getaways in a converted barn filled with intriguing art, quirky antiques and an honesty gin bar - 30 minutes from Oxford

Read guest comments

You'll know you've found the right place because your name is written on a blackboard by the door. You'll also find a breakfast hamper with homemade cake. Walk in to bold colours, soaring ceilings and exposed elm beams. The light-filled rooms run one to the other; a kitchen with bright blue Aga - there’s a combi-oven too - cream cupboards, solid wood worktops, exposed stone work and a painted antique Chinese horse. The dining room is where you’ll find the gins (hurrah!) - and leather sofas to sink into. A freestanding wood-burner (logs are on the house) is the focus of the sitting room and unabashed orange, lime and aquamarine in the cushions and rug add to the drama. Bedrooms have real linen, comfy mattresses, lots of pillows and bathrooms with slate tiles, exposed pipework, gleaming white porcelain and a copper bathtub for two in one. If it rains you can take the ‘Nothing Better to do Quiz’ – find unusual objects around you and guess what they were used for and what was paid for them.  Cycle, walk, sit about in the sunny courtyard or hop in the car and visit Oxford.

  • At the beginning of our long drive is one of many designated footpaths for walkers. There is also an 8 mile circular walk directly out of the barn door. For those happier on 2 wheels bring your bikes and discover the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.
  • .In the picturesque village of Charney Bassett, there will be a warm welcome from hosts Jackie and Ian at The Chequers Inn. Walking distance either by road (no path) or across the fields. See our website for other pub recommendations.
  • White Horse Hill a NT beauty spot, take time to walk up the hill to visit the internationally-renowned Bronze-Age Uffington White Horse. It can be seen for miles away leaping across the head of a dramatic dry valley in the Ridgeway escarpment.
  • Oxford known for its dreaming spires is easily visited from the barn. Famous for its history and heritage we strongly recommend booking onto one of the walking tours where you will learn so much more about the colleges and the fascinating history.
  • The Cotswolds Villages - Burford, Broadway,Bourton-on-the-Water, Chipping Campden to name a few! Ideal for photography, arts and crafts, antiques, lazy days and afternoon teas.
  • You've seen them on the TV now visit the location - Downton Abbey (Highclere House), Blenheim Palace - Woodstock. Inspector Morse filming locations - Oxford Colleges and local pubs!

"Four of us have just stayed at The Long House and had a fantastic time. We've stayed in other places that we thought had essentially 'thought of everything' but Lesley had thought of everything and then some if that were possible. Lovely touches that we will leave you to discover, there are too many to list. The place itself has been decorated with a lot of thought and feeling. We loved the two seating areas which was helpful. The outside area is lovely and spacious, the courtyard section is a suntrap! It's a short walk to the pub although food at the Chequers is mediocre we felt."

"We visited the Long House for a long weekend and we're very impressed. The house was beautiful and very clean. Lesley had thought of everything, there were even little toiletry kits in the bathrooms incase you had forgotten anything. There was a welcome hamper including a delicious Victoria sponge and there were candles burning and soft music playing on our arrival. The gin bar was a fun touch. The beds were extremely comfy and the bath was the best we've ever had as it's so deep. We chose to eat in every night as the house was so cosy we wanted to make the most of it. "

"Had a lovely weekend in The Long House, Lesley was very kind and thoughtful and offered to put something in the oven for us as we were going to be arriving late from London. The house is gorgeous, warm and inviting, the fire was lighting, white wine in the fridge, ice in the freezer, lemon, lime and lots of gin....what more does one want!! (Well actually a lovely homemade sponge cake!) The attention to detail is second to none and we would highly recommend to anyone."

"We had the most relaxing & enjoyable few days at The Long House over New Year, just what we needed to recharge ourselves. The attention to detail and countless thoughtful touches throughout made it the most amazing place to stay. The eclectic mix of old and new, it had everything we could possible have needed to enjoy the tranquillity of the house - from log fire to gin bar and the fantastic bathroom with the copper bath! Definitely a 5* experience, we are very much looking forward to returning. Thank you both for your warm welcome, we wish you continued success and unreservedly recommend."
