A 17th-century Cotswold inn on the banks of the Thames; pick up a pint, drift into the garden, watch the world float by – this place is a drinking fisherman's paradise. Inside you find timber frames, exposed stone walls, a wood-burner and local ales on tap. Logs are piled high in alcoves, good art hangs on the walls, old flagstones lead to the bar where seasonal and delicious modern British cooking is showcased alongside pub classics.

Bedrooms (three in the pub and three in the courtyard) have lovely fabrics, smartly dressed beds, smart TVs and fresh milk for your morning tea. Wake to a scrumptious breakfast: full English with local smoked bacon and Stornoway black pudding, shakshuka, pastries and jams, decent coffee.

The riverside garden is a huge attraction. In balmy weather you can watch boats pass as you eat al fresco from breakfast to dinner, admire smooth lawns, sit on a bench with a pint and a look at the menu, relax.

"We had a fabulous stay. The staff were welcoming, friendly and all round excellent. They could not have been more helpful, ready and willing to ask the chef when we asked about the food, which was seriously delicious. I recommend the puy lentil salad, and the rainbow trout was perfect. Home-made breads, lovely rooms, and our dog was made very comfortable too. We met the owner, who was charming, and we did not realise it was him until we read about the pub after our visit. We cannot wait to go back again, and it was a wonderful experience, we cannot rave about it more."
