A marvellous spot overlooking Rutland Water for this 1760 former hunting lodge with good seasonal British food and very comfortable bedrooms

Guests are greeted with a glass of wine, the log-burner gives out that gorgeous wood smoke smell and cheerful staff glide about making sure all is running smoothly. Find yourself a quiet corner in the Orangery, bar or brasserie, all leading directly into each other with lots of natural daylight. Communal areas have fresh flowers and candles on the tables and low sofas for those wanting a chat or to look at the seasonally-adjusted menu. There are two or three daily specials and some of the ingredients are homegrown.

Peaceful bedrooms (some with watery views) vary in price and size and all are named after local places or birds. You'll find a tipple of 'The King's Ginger' and some biscuits waiting for you. Wake to a handsome breakfast of porridge and berries, eggs Benedict or Florentine, full English, avocado and sriracha. Borrow wellies and walk it off in the garden.

Try two Rutland ales on pump and some fine local gins.

Punti d'interesse locali da

  • Rutland Fly Fishing with Rob Waddington. This is an exciting active and fascinating branch of the sport. Rob and his team teach you the skills and knowledge needed to learn to fly fish and help you catch a trout or two.
  • Deene Park is a wonderful eclectic mix of architectural styles, having evolved through the centuries. Before the Norman Conquest and for 150 years afterwards the Manor Of Deene belonged to the Abbey Of Westminster and was used occasionally by the Abbot.
  • Grafton Park Wood An interesting yet also slightly freaky woodland. The woodland is an exair force base from WWII, the American Airforce used the woodland as camouflage for their buildings, many of which still remain, although slightly derelict.
  • Rockingham Castle overlooks the villages of Rockingham and Caldecott and has views over the Wellend Valley. Privately owned, it is open to the public for events and certain days. The place was visited by writer Charles Dickens.
  • Fermyn Woods A stunning ancient woodland set just south of Corby. With walking trials, orienteering routes, several play areas and a café.
  • The history of the smallest county in England is represented by Rutland County Museum in Oakham, which draws from rural life and archaeology to explore the history of Rutland. It exhibits include an Ice Age bison horn and extinct oysters from the Triassic & Jurassic periods.
