Tradition and comfort on the border with Wales, a welcoming country-house hotel with warm rooms, pretty gardens and delicious food

Read guest comments

In a blissful valley lost to the world, a small country house that sparkles on the side of a peaceful hill. This is one of those places where guests return again and again. Outside, fields tumble down to a stream that marks the border with Wales. Daffodils erupt in spring, the lawns are scattered with deckchairs in summer, paths lead into the hills for fine walking.

It's a comfortable place with an open fire in the bar; colourful art and super food in the restaurant; the daily papers and the odd chaise longue in the sitting room. Bedrooms are in the main building, except two suites with spa baths and a family room in the old stables, both with their own outdoor space: all are roomy and with super garden views. Food is taken seriously, much is seasonal and local and you can opt for dinner bed and breakfast if you'd rather not venture out at night.

Walk all day on Offa's Dyke and return to sit by the fire with a glass of wine.

"3 adults booked for two nights DBB at short notice. Rooms in main hotel nicely furnished and very comfortable. Dinners excellent and very good cooked breakfast. Decided to stay for four more nights. Dinner menu changed every nifgt and plenty of choice - well worth the two AA rosettes. Owners very visible making sure guests had everything they needed and also kept staff on their toes. Would stay there again and recommend to friends"
