You’ll love Tintinhull Gardens, Montacute House, Ham Hill, the Prince of Wales pub… and this sweet, fresh, cosy, rustic cottage for 2

Wind round a final bend to confront a wild valley, so wide and grassy it could be a backdrop to ‘Watership Down’. Here lie 35 acres dotted with horses and mown by sheep: yours to explore. The owners’ house, at the end of the long, high-hedgerow’d lane, was the Keeper’s Cottage for Montacute House, six miles down the bridle path and Elizabethan (yes, you can walk there). Your cottage (please no dogs), a beautifully converted single-storey old dairy, is attached. Open the stable door to a find a little nest glowing in the sunlight, all whites, creams and soft grey-blues. The clever woodwork is Andy’s - his workshop is on site – while Sarah runs a stud farm and breeds German ponies. A hamstone wall and an arched doorway separate the dreamy living and sleeping areas: fat white sofa, coir carpeted floor, woody kitchenette. Eat in Tintinhull, stock up in Yeovil, visit the farm shop a mile down the lane (it has a bistro too). Return to exposed beams above the big goosedown-dressed bed, and a little courtyard that catches the sun.

Local points of interest from Sarah Steggall:

Punti d'interesse locali da
Sarah Steggall:

  • Wake up to magnificent birdsong. Woodpeckers, squirrels and badgers in the wood, wrens and swallows nesting in the small barn opposite the cottage and buzzards displaying their flying skills over our hills. We even have wild deer in our hedgerows.
  • There is no need to shop on your way here. You will find the little kitchen stocked with all the immediate essentials to welcome you plus local farm produce of your choice to create a delicious breakfast the following morning.
  • Although Sock Farm nestles in its own valley at the end of a long 'No Through Road' we are within a few minutes of main routes from London to the West Country. Its unique position offers peace and tranquility with easy access to explore and enjoy the area
  • Enjoy some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the area. Our eldest son is a rather splendid Head Chef and has put together a 'well tested' list of suggestions for you to try.
  • For keen walkers we have direct access from our land onto Monarch's Way. This runs for 615 miles and was the escape route taken by King Charles ll after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester! A stroll to Montacute House is only 40 minutes though.
  • A growing number of our guests now have electric cars. We have a charging point in the stable yard close to the cottage for convenience.

"Sock cottage is everything the photos indicate and ... far more. It's clean, tidy, and very thoughtfully well stocked. Sarah and Andy are lovely hosts who really care about making your stay a good one. For me, it was a beautiful, peaceful bolt hole, enabling me to sit with a glass of wine in the evening, on one occasion outside in the little courtyard, breathing in clean, fresh air in the diminishing twilight, listening to buzzards and owls calling and horses chuffing .. soooo peaceful and therapeutic! I really hope to return again and would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone."

"Sock Cottage is a lovely place to spend time away - it's set in rolling countryside, with lots of walks available (particularly to great local pubs!) and is in a very good location for exploring Somerset and beyond. The cottage itself is beautifully furnished and very comfortable. The kitchen stocked with local produce for breakfast was very much appreciated too! Sarah and Andy are very welcoming (as are their two gorgeous dogs) and they went out of their way to help make our stay wonderful. Highly recommended. "

"It was easy to have such a wonderful, very relaxing and restful two weeks in the charming, beautifully decorated and well equipped Sock Cottage. We enjoyed the peaceful countryside at the doorsteps of the Cottage with birds, rabbits and squirrels to watch. Meeting the Ponies and of course the two lovely dogs made Sock Farm a very special place. Sarah and Andy already too are a wonderful reason to come back again to Sock Cottage. They gave us the feeling coming home every evening. We loved talking to them. They are unobtrusively there for you. Just a perfect place for a perfect holiday. "

"My criteria for a romantic weekend away included privacy, a DIY breakfast, lots to do, access to good restaurants and a memorable experience. We had it in spades! Although annexed to the main house, we had our own space and were left undisturbed. There was a big comfy bed and large ensuite shower with toilettries. Breakfast was delicious local produce, provided in abundance, enjoyed to the sound of birds, dogs & horses! We spent a day cycling around local attractions (Montecute House, Tintinhull Gardens, Ham Hill). Great pubs were recommended and Sarah offered to taxi us there/back. Superb!"

"Have just returned from a week's holiday. It was a most relaxing time and a pleasure to return each evening from exploring the surrounding places of interest to the very comfortable accommodation. The cottage is equipped to a very high standard with a well stocked kitchen for a very enjoyable breakfast each morning before setting off for the days' outing. Sarah and Andy's hospitality cannot be surpassed, we were made to feel welcome and very much at home from the moment we arrived and throughout the whole week- nothing was too much trouble. Can highly recommend and will definately return."

"I really can not say enough good things about this accommodation. It was a sheer pleasure to spend time in this green haven and the homely, spotlessly clean, comfortable cottage so beautifully decorated by the hosts. Absolute peace and tranquility for a few days sitting reading in the lovely grounds. Sarah and Andy were welcoming and helpful, two nicer people you could not wish meet, they were brilliant hosts. I have to say I am also a fan of Norman the Labrador who sat patiently outside my door hoping I would not be able to resist his little hints to spend some time throwing his stick"

"Given the lovely photos of the farm and cottage and the excellent reviews we’d read in advance our expectations were very high yet thanks to Sarah and Andy’s warmth, kindness and attention to detail in our welcome and comfort these were exceeded. We were made to feel very much at ease in roaming around their lovely farmland and their lovely dogs, Norman and Olive, were a joy to play with. Non- dog lovers reading this should note that they’re not at all intrusive and will only engage with you if you want to join in, which my friend and I did with great enthusiasm. Highly recommended! "If only we had booked more than 3 days at Sock Cottage!! Sarah and Andy made us feel very welcome, and ensured that we had everything we needed - including excellent recommendations for the local pubs. The cottage could not have been more idyllic - fully stocked with the most amazing and fresh local breakfast goodies, and a perfect place for us to hide away in for a few days. We will visit again no doubt. Its a must! "

"We've just come back from an amazing Bank Holiday weekend staying at Sock Cottage. Sarah made us feel so very welcome and was extremely helpful advising on local restuarants to ensure I had a lovely Birthday meal. The kitchen was stocked with delicious local produce which we thoroughly enjoyed. The cottage itself and decor was beautiful with so many lovely homely touches and the setting was idyllic and peaceful with gorgeous views. We also absolutely fell in love with Norman and Olive, the two gorgeous dogs and would love to return very soon. "

"This is a truly charming cottage, restored with great care, craftsmanship and thought. It exceeds its promises. We found everything beautifully presented, immaculately clean and very welcoming, and were at once, at home with all we could need and much more! Lovely bed linen, fresh flowers, and Sarah and Andy, so accomodating and welcoming, and providing any extra attention they could lavish. We felt very cared for in the beautiful surroundings of their farm set in the peace of the lovely Somerset countryside. This was a haven and a privilege! "

"I booked Sarah and Andy's cottage for a romantic (proposal) getaway for me and my partner (now fiancee). The cottage itself was extremely well presented and we felt at home straight away. The location was exactly what I was looking for, rural but well connected, ideal for long beautiful walks into the surrounding countryside and to National Trust properties. Sarah and Andy were welcoming but not intrusive during our stay. They welcomed us into their farm house for a cup of tea when we arrived and gave us a wealth of ideas for activities in the area. We'll definitely be coming back!"
