In the old village of Swynnerton on Lord Stafford's estate is the spruce and dog-friendly Fitzherbert with ten contemporary-country bedrooms tucked away from the pub in a beautifully renovated old farmhouse. Grab a brolly if you need to and stroll over to the bar, lounge and snug warmed by three delicious fires for breakfast, lunch or supper.

A vivacious team ferry platefuls of flavoursome food to elegant tables: seafood platters, steak and stout pies, crumbles, brownies and local cheeses. They do a great line in comfort food, have a good list of local suppliers, local ales, wines by the glass and real cider, too. That's before you factor in the biggest selection of port by the bottle of any pub in the UK.

Unbend on the private sun-trapping terrace after a scenic 3.5 mile circular walk straight from the door. Gather a party of up to 40, and book the Staffordshire Room for a very special occasion.
