All the lovely old bits survive – timber frames, sagging beams, and an ancient inglenook with a roaring fire, but interiors have a contemporary feel with rich colours, stripped floorboards, art on the walls and leather chairs in front the fire. Farmers drop in to chew the cud, walkers come to defrost in front of the fire while knocking back a pint of local ale, and the world and his wife come from near and far for food from the estate. Much is homegrown or raised right here (including venison) then cooked with flair.
Stylish rooms have comfy beds, wonky walls and floors, heritage hues, fine soft furnishings and well-chosen art. One has a fake Canaletto hanging above a free-standing bath, another has a four-poster bed, all have smart robes in good bathrooms.
Step out for gentle (or more taxing) walks; explore Bury St Edmunds, a market town steeped in history. Medieval Lavenham is close, too. Return to much comfort.

- Wool made Suffolk rich in medieval times and many beautiful timber-framed buildings survive. You can see them most notably in Lavenham and Hadleigh along with some fine churches.
- Head over to Dedham Vale, epicentre of Constable Country, where you can visit places now immortalised in his art. Thomas Gainsborough was also a local, while the Alfred Munnings museum in Dedham is worth seeing.
- The pub is actively involved in local events, such as Higham point to point races and the annual Hadleigh Show. They are happy to involve guests who wish to enjoy a slice of country life.
- This is a popular bolthole for shooting parties. The pub does not organise shoots but can point you in the right direction.
