Escape to your own snug bolthole above a beautiful hall. Creative village community, tasty breakfast delivered, come and go as you please

Your apartment is above a lovely big gallery/hall – with a piano and a wood-burning stove. The building was once the workshop of artist Sir Frank Brangwyn and is in the heart of a thriving village with an arty heritage. Shirley uses the hall as an exhibition space sometimes and you can wander down the road to the award-winning Museum of Art + Craft, and visit the many craft makers, jewellers and artists who work in the village.

Find a quiet, comfy bedroom with garden views and a cosy sitting room with a kitchen area. Shirley leaves you homemade cakes, chocolates and breakfast things, and each morning brings over a tray of fruits, yogurt, local artisan bread and eggs for you to cook how you wish.  Order the papers, borrow books and maps, sip your coffee and plan your day out.

The South Downs National Park is your stomping ground; Brighton, Lewes and Glyndebourne are all close by. Return to rustle up supper, or stroll down the road to one of the friendly pubs.

  • We are ideally placed for the many Spring and Summer Festivals in the area: The Brighton Festival and Art Trails, Charleston Literary Festival, Glyndebourne and a little further away, Chichester Festival Theatre.
  • This is a beautiful area and ideal for walking and cycling: we are in the South Downs National Park with miles of open country yet within easy reach of Brighton and links to London and Gatwick. Cycles can be hired locally.
  • Ditchling is a quintessential English village: historic buildings, village green, duck pond - plus a fascinating Museum of Art+Craft, numerous cafes and two excellent foodie pubs.
  • There are a number of sporting events closeby: Plumpton Races, Hickstead Equestrian Showground and the London to Brighton cycle ride goes right past the door! Slightly further afield is the stunning racecourse at Goodwood.
  • Lewes is 15 minutes away: an historic town with hilltop castle, weekly food markets, independent shops and many antique emporiums to explore.
  • What else? Sussex has many beautiful gardens and historic homes. Brighton's Pavilion, Museum, and other seaside attractions are a short drive away. For the more sporting guests, there are numerous and varied golf courses.

"Such a beautiful place to stay. The decoration is lovely. Breakfast delivered to our door was unbelievable (fresh bread, fruit and yogurt, organic eggs). We didn't want to leave. Shirley is charming and welcoming. We would definitely recommend to a friend. "

"This is a really special place. We loved the idea of a breakfast tray left at the door so we could have breakfast in our pyjamas in our own time. It wasn't any old breakfast tray either as each day the fruit salad, bread and cakes were different. Having a little kitchen area, lovely bathroom and seating area were perfect too. We will definitely re-visit as we left feeling so rested."

"The self-contained accommodation comprises two comfortable twin beds in a light, quiet bedroom on the garden side; a 'day room' with good kitchenette facilities and two easy chairs; and a well-equipped, modern bathroom. The accommodation is pleasantly, modestly and sensibly decorated and furnished.. Breakfast is brought to the door by Shirley, to augment the 'dry goods' already in the kitchenette, and is superb: fresh fruits and juice, cakes, bread, eggs if you want them, and even the newspaper. Shirley is a most thoughtful and hospitable hostess, and her prices are extremely reasonable"

"Comfortable well appointed flat in a lovely part of the country with good places to eat and drink within easy walking distance. Shirley was an excellent hostess and a mine of local information. Fantastic idea having delicious breakfast items and fresh cake delivered to your door! Would definitely recommend!"

"This is a very comfortable, clean, quiet, convenient, private, well-run B&B. Shirley's formula is clearly carefully considered, and impeccably delivered, and Shirley herself is a charming hostess. The breakfast arrangements are excellent, and the accompanying newspaper is a nicely thoughtful bonus. Would we return? Most certainly."

"What we really enjoyed about our recent stay was having the freedom of a self contained and stylish apartment with a comfy bed, bathroom, and a small but well equipped kitchen to make tea or coffee and enjoy the contents of the breakfast tray. This is a thing of wonder: fresh eggs, yogurt, a loaf of bread, croissants, homemade jams & marmalades all beautifully presented and left outside your door each morning. Shirley was a knowledgeable and helpful hostess. The Bull is v good for dinner. Would we stay again? Yes. Would we recommend you to stay? We would."

"We very much enjoyed staying at this unique, stylish and comfortable house. Shirley gave us a very warm welcome and was a mine of useful information about the local area. She provided a lovely breakfast tray each day with locally sourced produce which set us up for the day. The property is ideally located for visiting Brighton and the South Downs, with a huge variety of things to do and places to visit. Highly recommended!"
