Retreat from life as usual for a couple of days and feel completely cosseted here by the lovely team and superb cooking. The creative kitchen team do good things with fish, pheasant and venison - all local produce. The menu is varied enough that you can tuck into pub classics or something more elaborate depending on your mood. Bring a party and eat in the bright dining room.
Pull on your boots and head out for a stomp - there are great walks from the door: join the Wayfarers Walk or the Test Way; The Kennet & Avon Canal (hop on in nearby Hungerford); and the Wessex Ridgeway, which takes you past the mystical Avebury Stones.
Settle down in front of the roaring wood-burner; on fine days sip your G&T on the terrace at the back. Stay the night in pretty bedrooms (antique furniture, velvet headboards, peaceful views) or in the cottage, book the lovely private dining room with access to the terrace. Dogs are welcomed with open arms too - find treats on the bar and beds and bowls for those that stay over.
