There's an unrivalled sense of purpose to this place, part of the Denton Reserve – a large estate addressing biodiversity crisis, flood management and the production of sustainable food. Named after a delicious wild mushroom, the inn is decorated in shades of brown and relaxing earthy tones. Three snug areas (no TVs) have wooden settles, books, scrabble, chess and checkers.
The oft-changing menu includes beef, lamb and chicken reared on the estate and there are some pub favourites along with a few surprises and some very good pies – lovely to accompany them with a pint of Landlord or Ossett White Rat. Breakfast is a treat, offering the choice of a delicious continental with fresh pastries, yogurts and fruit or cooked options from Wednesday to Sunday - smashed broad beans on rye toast, French Toast with fruit compote, or The Penny Bun Full English with Tamworth sausages and Burford Brown eggs cooked how you like.
Hikes in the Yorkshire Dales are very special indeed so fill your lungs with good air.
