Remote cottage on Cawdor Estate surrounded by valleys, moors and abundant wildlife, and with sandy beaches close by

This early 19th-century stone farmhouse has been beautifully renovated by Andrew, who is a carpenter, and although he lives nearby with his two friendly dogs you’ll feel quite private – the nearest house is a mile away, on the road to Cawdor village.

A wood-burner in the sitting room adds to the cosy feel, and books and an armchair on the landing make for a quiet space to read. Cooks will love the kitchen, which has everything you’ll need to make proper meals – or even bake a cake – or drive to Boath House Hotel, nine miles away, for gourmet fare. The café in the walled garden is delightful if it's sunny.

Revel in the quiet and open skies, borrow mountain bikes or walk the surrounding area, where there’s much variety in the landscape – hills, forest, loch, river. Look out for deer, red squirrels, pheasants, partridges and over 80 varieties of birds, head to Nairn or Moray Firth for sandy beaches and picturesque villages. Cairngorm National Park is an hour away.

Local points of interest from Andrew Floyd:

Punti d'interesse locali da
Andrew Floyd:

  • There are miles of walks on the Farmhouse doorstep, up onto the moors or into the woods where there is a loch, home to a pair of Ospreys in the summer months. We've counted more than 80 species of bird in and around the property.
  • In the immediate vicinity lies Cawdor Castle and a little farther afield Culloden Battlefield and the ancient stone circles of Clava Cairns. On the coast is the historic barrack town of Fort George, below which is a possible place for dolphin spotting.
  • A short drive takes you to the River Findhorn, the wide water meadows of Drynachan and Daless or the rocky gorges at Dulsie Bridge and Randolph's Leap. Logie Steading nearby, has a cafe, an art shop, a whisky shop and sells its own shorthorn beef.
  • There are miles of white sandy beaches along the south bank of the Moray Firth. Nearest at hand is Nairn, just 8 miles away, stretching East to the Culbin Forest with its miles of cycle tracks, and Findhorn with its resident colony of seals.
  • Farther afield, on the other side of Inverness, is the Black Isle and the pretty towns of Fortrose and Cromarty, with some seriously good restaurants. Between them lies Chanonry Point which is a popular dolphin watching spot
  • South over the moors is the valley of the magnificent River Spey. There are tours to be had at some of the many distilleries on or near the river as well as the dignified town of Grantown-on-Spey, and the buzzy outdoor sports centre of Aviemore.
