Immerse yourselves in the heather-clad peaks, moorland, glens and diverse wildlife of the magnificent Pentland Hills Regional Park

Walkers, mountain bikers, wild swimmers and nature lovers have over 10,000 acres of playground, criss-crossed by hundreds of paths and dotted with rivers, lochs, waterfalls and reservoirs. The views are particularly spectacular too, yet you're only a 20-minute drive from Edinburgh. Your base is a rustic stone hay barn with a raised ceiling and a thoroughly modern, well thought-out interior. If you're trapped by bad weather you'll still feel happy, cosy by the wood-burner or up in the mezzanine watching moody skies and scudding clouds.

A sleek kitchen has all the gear, you eat at a Scandi dining table with views to the South Black Hill; tea, milk and locally-made biscuits will be waiting for you. Book in to the spa yurt with a wood-fired steam sauna hiding in the wild woodland garden, plunge into the outdoor stock tank to cool off.

Plump pillows, woollen blankets and perfect peace will lull you to deep sleep.

Local points of interest from Susan & Jenny Cowan:

Punti d'interesse locali da
Susan & Jenny Cowan:

  • The Cartshed is set amongst thousands of acres of stunning countryside with walking trails from the doorstep. Picnic in the hills, hike to the local pub or watch wildlife and the world go by from the nearest hilltop. Enjoy the enchanted woodland sauna yurt
  • The Cartshed is at the centre of Eastside Farm - our working hill sheep farm. Old-fashioned grasses, herbs & heather illustrate the timeless values of our traditional farming systems. Red grouse, peregrines, ravens & wild hares are a common sight.
  • Edinburgh, Scotland's compact, hilly capital city is jam-packed with great things to do and it's only a 10 mile drive from the Cartshed to the city centre! Explore the cobbled streets of George St, Victoria St, Stockbridge, the West End & the Royal Mile.
  • The Lothians and beyond have so much to offer. From rustic country spas, sandy beaches and surfing, to distilleries, skiing and sculpture parks. For Outlander fans the Cartshed offers the perfect base to chase coasts, castles and golden light!
  • Take a day trip to the coast, Sula boat trips will take you out into the Firth of Forth to spot gannets and puffins. Return to shore picking up fresh lobster and chips at the Lobster Shack open in the North Berwick harbour throughout the summer months.
  • Book supper at our farming neighbours on the other side of the Pentlands. The Free Company host magical seasonal suppers with all the ingredients grown on their organic farm. Think firepits, old farm buildings and long rustic tables.
