A gloriously peaceful old mill with a converted cart shed. Find original art, sculptures, books and soul on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path

Read guest comments

You'll feel free as a bird bowling down narrow lanes to photographer Jo and sculptor John's magical spot. Wild swimmers can jump in the millpond or nip down a sea pebble path to an (almost) private beach. You're on the coastal path so walkers will be happy, near arty Newport for galleries and cafés, you can hire kayaks in Cardigan Bay or take a ferry to Skomer Island. Return to your converted 18th-century cart shed (perfect for 2 - 3 grown ups but 4 can fit in) with postbox red doors and a stone seat in the garden by the waterfall and pond - great fun to picnic out here, or on your own balcony with sea views. Inside is upside down (living space on first floor, bedrooms with Welsh slate floors and underfloor heating and teeny but perfectly-formed wet rooms each downstairs). The hall is lined with books - pop a pound in the charity box - the open, airy living space has wooden floors, original art and sculpture, a ducky kitchen that could win a prize for 'craftmanship in a small space', Afghan and Tibetan rugs, antiques, squishy sofa and a big wood-burner. This won't suit people who want bustle, it's a place for curious souls, dreamers, artists, peace-seekers.

Punti d'interesse locali da
Jo Reid & John Peck:

  • This is a simple yet luxurious cottage, sleep in Egyptian cotton sheets, under down duvets, to the sound of the waterfall. The perfect place for Bird watchers, Dolphin/Seal spotters, wild flower enthusiasts, Artists/Photographers and of course, You.
  • Escape to this idyll, and forsake your car. 150 yds down our wooded path to Aberbach. The cove has everything, cliffs for scrambling, beautiful multi coloured pebbles, sand, rock pools, mussel beds and caves, and sometimes stunning beach art, have a go!
  • This area offers a network of footpaths. 1st the magnificent coast path, which is backed up by small bus services, so you can choose to walk only one way. 2nd take one of the many paths and walk up into the Preseli hills behind us, simply breathtaking.
  • Wonderful to relax in the garden, listening to the waterfall next to the old water mill. Explore the woodlands round the mill pond, and find the stone seats under the pines, looking out to sea, one of the great places for a sundowner and BBQ.
  • Bring your own canoe, and tether it in the garden by the beach. Paddle round Fishguard bay, safe from the main tide rip. Explore inaccessible coves, inlets and caves. Be afloat amongst the sea birds and seals, pure magic in the early or late light.
  • Further afield are boat trips to the islands, ruined castles, standing stones, bluestone quarry (for stone henge?), music/arts festivals, restaurants, cafes, galleries. Bessie's famous pub and the Bluestone brewery for a drink on a Cwm Gwaun walk.

"This is a magical place. A real rural retreat. The beach really is just a stone's throw away and my son was lucky enough to see a seal swimming in the cove one afternoon. The cottage has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very cosy and warm. "

"We have visited many Sawday places, but Felin Hescwm was, without doubt, the most lovely place we've stayed. The whole area - woodland, exquisite gardens, waterfalls and beautiful beach - were wonderful, despite wet and cool weather. Lots of places to visit, and very good local food. Everyone unfailingly friendly and pleasant. First and foremost, though, was the house. The barn has been repaired and restored to an impeccable standard. Fittings and furnishings are a joy to behold - the eclectic mix of antique and ultra-modern is perfect. The craftsmanship so evident. Perfect."

"A lovely characterful and comfortable cottage set in a gorgeous location. Jo and John are the perfect hosts; welcoming and appropriately attentive. We enjoyed our stay and I thoroughly recommend Felin Hescwm for those who enjoy coastal countryside and want a break from the hustle and bustle of a busy life."

"The first glimpse of Felin Hescwm as you approach on the winding single track Road that descends into a tiny woodland valley that tells you that this is a special place. Open the welcoming deep red doors and the wonderfully designed and furnished interiors serve to emphasise that specialness. It is clear that much love, thought and knowledge has gone into making Felin Hescwm a very fine place to stay. Outside the guests are invited to enjoy the cleverly landscaped garden designed by Jo and John. A place very difficult to leave and definitely one to revisit. Thank you Jo and John."

"Felin Hescwm is a beautifully restored mill in an idyllic location. The architecture, gardens and surrounding land have been sensitively rebuilt using local materials and traditional crafts that quietly echo the natural beauty of the landscape. The accommodation was perfect, well equipped with everything we needed, plus fast and reliable wifi. Having the beach 150 yards from our door was incredible. Our hosts were warm, kind and discreet. I agree with the sentiment that this place is for dreamers, artists, peace-seekers. This is a rare and special place that feels effortless, timeless."
