Traditional bedrooms lie under the beams of this fascinating country mansion - a grand, hospitable B&B near St Malo and sand beaches

Read guest comments

This handsome manoir in big peaceful gardens has been lovingly restored by Claude, who speaks six languages, and equally well-travelled Agnès; both are charming and friendly - to you and your dog. Theirs is a fascinating house built in 1714 with French windows opening to a south-facing terrace and a salon lined with oak panelling; relax by the blazing fire.

Bedrooms, comfortable, traditional and upstairs, are dominated by dark ships' timbers; the port of St Malo is close, so are golden sand beaches - perfect for woofy walks. Breakfast is served beneath the chandelier - delicious, generous and imaginative in front of the fire in winter.

Wander through the mini-park surrounding you, visit the permanent art exhibition and find lots of quiet places to sit peacefully with a book, or hop on a bike and head to St Malo - about 25 minutes of (mostly flat) pedalling.

  • Saint Malo - only 10 minutes away - enjoy fabulous food & shopping & a breathtaking view of the sea! A beautiful 18th century cathedral can be reached via winding streets twisting this way & that - wandering around this enchanting walled city is a must!
  • Dinard - only 15 minutes away - was THE fashionable hideout favoured by English gentry in the 1900's. After you've enjoyed imagining what living in some of the exquisite homes would be like, step into any one of many restaurants for a fabulous meal.
  • Dinan is only a bit further afield. Founded almost a THOUSAND years ago it features an amazing mix of ancient, old & up to date. Walk the cobblestone streets, admire century old buildings. For images of this medieval city look at the video on our site.
  • In every direction, there are many activities you can choose from - exceptional bike trails, walking paths, golf courses, ancient monuments, great shopping, unforgettable food. We've lived here for years & will enjoy helping you plan a memorable visit.
  • Mont St Michel "Wonder of the Western World" is very close by. See why UNESCO classes this tiny island as a World Heritage Site, climb up to the glorious Abbey & look out over the shifting sands & rolling sea. Watch out for St Michel in the stairway...
  • Most of our home was built in 1710 by Guillaume des Trauchandieres but part of it is even older. Built in the 16th century for Jacques Cartier's sister, it's now our gite! Find out more by watching this video: https://youtu.be/cFBqQnbMYrY

"We had an very special stay with Agnes and Claude who looked after us so well. The house is gorgeous and bursting with character. They recommended and booked a fantastic restaurant for us and the whole experience, for our whole family was truly a highlight of our holiday. "

"We received a very warm welcome from Claude and Agnes, with tea and biscuits on fine china, which was very pleasant after a hard day's driving. We enjoyed a first class meal with a good wine, in excellent company with our host. Our room was large, with charming décor and a very comfortable bed, ensuring a good night's sleep. The en suite was excellent. We enjoyed a superb breakfast with a full English if we had wanted it. The building itself is full of character and history. We would highly recommend a short or long stay here. They also offer a self catering gite. We will return."

"We stayed two nights in this very special place. Wonderful bedroom, with quality bedding, deep pile carpet, and a comfortable bed. Bathroom was a dream. Champagne by a roaring fire before dinner. Candlelight table with wonderful food, and superb wines . Breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice, boiled eggs, fruit salad, fresh pastries and bread. Claude was a wonderful host. We look forward to our next stay. Bill and Ann Sisson."

"We stayed here for 2 nights in July with our 3x children, on our way through to a holiday in Brittany. We have stayed in many B&Bs over the years, but never have we had such a genuinely warm reception. Agnes and Claude could not have been more accommodating and welcoming to our whole family - offering to collect us from the nearby town when we got lost, chatting with us over tea in the drawing room and friendly to our kids. They were so generous with their time that it felt more like staying with old friends, rather than in a guest house. Excellent value for money."

"Thank you Agnes and Claude. Wonderful hosts. We were greeted on arrival with a welcoming cup of tea then quick change and drinks in the lounge before a delicious meal in the dining room, candelabra lit and fire burning. Breakfasts were an event too. Would thoroughly recommend. "

"Agnes and Claude are the most charming hosts and their Malouinière is one of the most special houses we have stayed in! So near St Malo, yet deep in the country. We were a party of 3 generations and appreciated very much the loan of bikes and Claude taking us and bikes in his van to our cycling route. Both Agnes and Claude are a mine of information on the local area (and indeed the rest of the world!) Excellent breakfasts and very comfortable rooms...we loved it!"

"What a gem of a place to stay ! Agnes and Claude are very charming and attentive hosts. Their lovingly restored Malouiniere exudes a hospitable and relaxing atmosphere. They obviously enjoy ensuring that their visitors have the best experience of exploring the delightful local countryside and coast with recommendations for the best beaches, restaurants and the many other interesting local attractions. We are so glad we stayed for five nights . A superb Sawday find . "

"A most delightful and interesting house. A wide, sweeping staircase made of thick timbers from a pirate ship take you to your lovely bedroom where you can relax in elegantly decorated rooms equipt with every comfort. Agnes and Claude are charming hosts who take obvious pleasure in ensuring their guests want for nothing. A perfect place to stay when exploring St Malo and the surrounding area."

"Wonderful entertaining hosts who are enthusiastic about sharing the history of their beautiful home. The room respected the history while offering every modern touch we could need, plus a comfortable bed! Difficult to find - directions needed on website -- but a real find, once you're there!"

"An incredible stay in a beautiful home built in the 1700's. Hosts Agnes and Claude were beyond kind and thoughtful with our children and accommodated every request with grace. I just wish we could have stayed longer in this serene place. I could eat incredible breakfasts like the ones Agnes and Claude serve (homemade jams, warm pastries, fruit, perfectly boiled eggs, hot tea - all in gorgeous crockery) every day! With our sincere thanks for exemplary hospitality, Hannah, Matt and family "

"A wonderful place to stay before travelling home from St.Malo. We had a warm welcome from Agnes and Claude, the charming owners, and a lovely meal with them that evening. We will definitely stay again, and would like it to be longer than overnight next time. A beautiful historic house, spotless rooms, we would give them 5*****"

"What a wonderful few days we spent in this lovely, historical house. We had the warmest welcome from Agnes and Claude; champagne on arrival, recommendations for restaurants and visits, reservations made if needed and the most comfortable beds ever in rooms beautifully furnished with family antiques. Homemade breakfasts with fruit from the garden, locally made jams and fresh croissants were a delight. Agnes is a great cook and our evening meal was delicious with wine chosen by Claude from his cellar. It's a perfect place to stay for catching the ferry or if you want to explore Brittany further. "

"My wife & I really enjoyed our time at Les Trauchandieres. Agnes & Claude gave us such a warm welcome ( with wine by the fire !) on a very cold night. The house was inviting & beautifully decorated. It was obvious that it is a real family home. Our bedroom was spacious & the bed was first rate. What a great sleep we had. We are very interested in historic homes & we enjoyed every minute in this one ! We are already planning our next visit - in the spring so we can experience Agnes' many gardens."

"The house was characterful and charming, like our hosts. The accommodation is very comfortable: furniture – antique; bathrooms – up-to-date. The right order. We booked into Malouiniere-des-Trauchandieres for one night, to break up the trip back to Cherbourg following a stay at a rather basic farmhouse in Southern Brittany. After sampling Claude’s brilliant breakfast – varieties of sweet and savoury fresh breads, eggs, home-made jams, local fruit and fun cereals for the children – we felt that our holiday had just started. Of course the opposite was true, but it was a great send off. Recommend"

"The house was easy to find from the ferry and extremely quiet. We really slept well! The next day Monsieur Francois organized a visit for us at another Malouiniere. La Ville Bague If you like old houses and history this area the "Clos Poulet" is amazing. The house is completely surround by countryside."
