You're high up at 500 metres, the views are spectacular and the peace palpable – the Cévennes has been a place of refuge throughout history so you've landed somewhere very special. The house is old, with three main buildings on lots of different levels, and is decorated in a smart modern but casual style with thick, natural weaves, wood and wrought iron. The main sitting room has deep sofas, a big open fireplace and a very large screen if you're stuck indoors.
Mostly you'll be outside, cooling off in the gorgeous pool or braving the river, finding quiet spots in the lush garden for a read or a doze, eating on one of the terraces with incredible views. The outdoor kitchen is very handy and the indoor one has everything a serious cook could need – you can hire a chef if you prefer. You're left fresh bread and croissants every morning at 7.30 and cleaning is done every day.
