An elegant 18th-century manor in the market town of Malesherbes, sitting behind its own walls and with mature gardens for a peaceful retreat

The main house is beautifully restored. High ceilings, period fireplaces, original staircases and elegant proportions are a joy and there are carefully chosen modern comforts. There's a two-bedroom gîte with its own private garden which can be rented for overflow, or independently. Spread out in big reception rooms: the salon has a good library in French and English, very comfortable seating and a wood-burning stove for chillier days.

The spacious, open-plan kitchen and dining room forms the heart of the house, centred around a brilliant prepping island so everyone can join in, and you're left some wine or local cider. Head out of doors on balmy days for two hectares of natural gardens with a terrace, a heated swimming pool, pergola with outdoor dining, barbecue, hammocks, and a woodland play area. Wander a potager and orchard.

Bedrooms are on the first floor – light, bright and filled with antiques, art and colourful fabrics.

Château d'Augerville is a beautiful golf club and spa, where you can spend a day in luxury and enjoy a meal and drinks on a stunning terrace.
Family adventure centre "Base de loisirs de Buthiers" is just down the road, with outdoor swimming pools, pony rides, tree climbing activities, wall climbing etc.
Auberge Canard is a restaurant and bar in the woodland amongst the caves of Fontainebleau forest and trees dressed in fairy lights. It's a 15-20 minute walk along the river. Sometimes they put on outdoor concerts during the summer.
Weekly local food market every Wednesday morning.
Château de Fontainebleau is 30 mins' drive.
Le Recyclerie Gâtinais is a great spot for charity shopping.
