A charming gite tucked into acres of ancient parkland, with an outdoor kitchen and deer wandering by at dusk

Wake to birdsong and the smell of coffee drifting up from the kitchen below; a nifty Nespresso machine guarantees a good brew. The gîte sits in the grounds of a 19th-century château and has been lovingly restored by its British owners, with painted shutters, wooden floors and old beams.

Downstairs, the open-plan kitchen and sitting room make for a sociable space. Bedrooms (one downstairs, two up which can be twins) are dressed in soft, earthy tones and have smart en suite bathrooms, one with a freestanding bath, the other two with walk-in showers.

Drift outside to read beneath the trees, wander through the rose garden or rustle up a pizza for lunch in the open summer kitchen. A shared saltwater pool is bliss on a warm afternoon, while pétanque and table tennis await under the trees. Beyond, 17 acres are yours to explore - parkland, fields, woodland.

Local points of interest from Sarah Hughes:

Punti d'interesse locali da
Sarah Hughes:

  • The gîtes themselves are situated within the grounds of Château Mirabel, a château built in the First Empire Style by King's Musketeer Philippe Latour Dejean whose initials can still be seen on the courtyard gates.
  • The property is set in seven hectares of gardens and ancient woodland, which leads directly onto the Voie Romaine (an ancient footpath created by the Romans during their occupation).
  • Within the grounds is a medieval fountain, believed to have miraculous healing properties and the site of former Roman baths (later turned into lavoirs by the de Gineste family).
  • Close to the village étape of Puylaurens, 'birthplace' of Marianne and a Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion (the original owners of the château were prominent Protestant noblemen).
  • The nearby town of Revel has a famous market, nominated one of the most beautiful markets in France. The inner belfry is reserved for local producers and is renowned for the quality of its produce, much of it organic.
  • Situated in the 'golden triangle' of Toulouse, Albi and Carcassonne, this area is known as the French Tuscany and/or the Pays de Cocagne and is dotted with ancient churches, pigeonniers and evidence of the wealth of the pastel industry.
