This moated château is listed as a 'Monument Historique' and has medieval roots, with 17th and 18th-century additions, a beautiful dovecote, a tiny 12th-century chapel, a working bakery and three magnificent 'salons' which guests are free to relax in – absolutely overflowing with paintings, sculptures, books and antiques, so your curiosity will be unbounded. There is an artist in residence usually – perhaps a musician, or a sculptor, and exhibitions are regular.
Four suites, each with a small anteroom and views over the courtyard and lawns, have extra beds, electric blankets in winter, and sometimes a merry fire. Breakfast is served until 11, so your mornings can be leisurely with fresh pastries from the boulangerie, fruit, yogurt, eggs and good coffee. Packed lunches can be arranged and sometimes there is dinner.
Set off on glorious walks through fields and woods, spotting deer and hares – the Normandy countryside is unspoilt.
