Barnahown - Bed & Breakfast in Co. Cork
Mitchelstown, P67 TD27, Co. Cork
Munster,
Irlanda
Wander up the lavender-lined path and the farmhouse opens out before you: mid-1800s bones coaxed back to life by local artisans, with exposed stonework, cherrywood boards and lime-rendered walls breathing history. Furniture is upcycled or locally made; art on the walls changes with the seasons. The house draws water from its own well and power from the sun, while breakfast comes locally – eggs from the owner’s hens, apple juice from a nearby farm, homemade soda bread and rhubarb jam.
Seven bedrooms are en suite with rainfall showers; one courtyard room is wheelchair accessible. Two upstairs rooms have Juliette balconies facing the Galtees – throw them wide on a fine morning and listen to birdsong drift up from the garden. Book a room B&B, or rent the whole place with friends; on request, a local chef can come and cook.
Come evening, sink into the sheltered hot tub. It’s the sort of place that makes you slow down without having to try.
