Walk into centuries of history and a noble Castello with roots in the 13th century and views over a river, olive trees and mountain ridges

It's a splendid spot and you're well looked after. Enjoy breakfasts of homemade cakes, fruit, freshly baked rolls and good coffee at the huge dining table, or spill out through French doors onto the terrace with a fine gazebo and views. You'll also find calming places to sit in the sheltered garden where you'll hear the refreshing tumble of the river Tavarone. Dinners can be arranged by appointment with a local chef.

Three voluminous bedrooms are on the first floor, with soft colours, original Liberty style furniture and gorgeous views. Two are en suite and the other has a private bathroom, all are spoiling. You have the use of a lounge, and day room with comfortable chairs and sofas, so if the weather isn't fine you can sit comfortably indoors with a book and watch the weather through beautiful windows.

You can swim in the mountain stream outside your door, walk to a good Agriturismo or drive three minutes to Monti for pizza.

Punti d'interesse locali da
Rosalind Mann:

  • The route of La Via Volta del Santo an ancient pilgrims route to Lucca passes by the house. This and other historic walks in Lunigiana lead through tiny villages and castles, following ancient mule tracks with the Apuan Alps in the distance.
  • Statue Stele - Anthropomorphic stone statues dating back to the 4th-1st millennium B.C. beautifully displayed in the castle of Pontremoli.
  • Quarrying of the iconic white Carrara marble started with the Roman Empire and has never stopped. You can take a tour today and visit the cave where Michealangelo chose his stone for David.
  • Locally there are hilltop towns and villages and ancient churches to discover. Lunigiana is known as the land of 100 castles. The area is rich in history and culture.
  • Lunigiana has both mountains and sea. The coast is only half an hour's drive with a choice of sandy beaches or rocky coves. The Parco Nazionale dell' Appennino provides natural beauty, breathtaking paths for hiking and cycling.
  • Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Genoa are all within easy reach either by car or train.
