Classic Peak District scenery surrounds Beeley's stone cottages and this public house, converted from three cottages into a coaching inn in 1747, and once visited by Edward VII. Alongside the beams, the log fires and the settles are comfy chairs for a quiet read – irresistible. Bar and brasserie serve traditional and modern food with meat from the estate, homegrown veg and herbs, seasonal surprises. In the tap room, walkers are refreshed with expertly kept ales, and the wine list is worth exploring.

Bedrooms are equally stylish and smart – some upstairs, some in separate buildings across the lane, all charming with duck feather duvets, vibrant artworks and lots of books. Breakfasts are hearty: help yourselves to cereals, yogurts, nuts and fruits while you wait for a full English or vegetarian.
