The Square - Self-catering house in Derbyshire
Parwich, Ashbourne, DE6 1QJ, Derbyshire
England,
Regno Unito
Those who appreciate English elegance will feel very much at home in this beautiful 18th-century weavers' cottage with mullioned windows; the village is rather reassuring too with a proper green, a Grade II listed church and a friendly pub. Inside discover much light and space, a drawing room with original stone fireplace - wood-burner inside all ready to light - wooden floors, bright rugs and elegant watercolours. The kitchen is a cosy hub with warming Rayburn, terracotta tiles and dresser; there's all you need to cook but if you're feeling idle you can ask for a simple supper to be left. You'll also find bread, eggs, wine, decent coffee and a jar of the owners' River Dove honey (Sue and Victor, who settle you in, are doing their level best to bolster the local bee population). Bedrooms are up fairly steep stairs but are worth it: vast beds with linen from Harrods no less, a sweet single, books and antiques; the shower room gleams and towels are nicely thick. Chatsworth, gorgeous walking and antique-hunting await, but you could just take a book to the fecund garden through the gate - all yours.

Susan Bridgett:
- Parwich itself is an active and very sociable village, the Sycamore pub is a hub of community life, there are regular film shows, art exhibitions, an annual "Gardens Open" day in June and the hugely popular and well supported "Wakes Week", in early July.
- Majestic scenery of the Peak District & Staffordshire Moorlands literally on your doorstep - a memorable backdrop to walking, cycling and pic-nicing - Tissington & High Peak trails, the Dove & Manifold valleys, the Roaches, Ilam Park and ancient Minninglow
- Carsington Water, our local reservoir, has a busy programme at its Visitor Centre and offers a raft of outdoor pursuits - bird & nature watching, kayaking, sailing, fishing. It's an 8 mile circular route, great for dog walking and you can hire bikes too.
- A clutch of distinctive market towns - fine architecture, quirky shops, antiques, farmers' markets and eateries in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Leek, Matlock, & Wirksworth. There is also Buxton spa town with its stunning Opera House and annual literary festival.
- Packed with heritage interest - the great houses of Chatsworth (and its Farm Shop), Haddon Hall, Kedleston & Calke Abbey, industrial history at Cromford Mill, David Mellor's design museum and steam train rides at Ecclesbourne and Churnet Valley railways.
- So many wonderful pubs & restaurants - it's a gastronomist's dream. Here are a few of our favourites - The George at Alstonefield, the Old Dog at Thorpe, the Shirehorse at Wyaston, the Gate at Brassington, the Cavendish at Baslow, the George at Hathersage.
