Downstairs, a fire smoulders in the sitting-room bar; upstairs, fine Georgian windows frame views of hill and forest. Bedrooms, all upstairs and named after cocktails, are full of comforts. They come with excellent bathrooms, lovely beds, crisp linen and warm colours. You get padded bedheads, sound systems, bowls of fruit, white robes to pad about in. Back downstairs, you'll succumb to a pre-dinner drink - in front of the fire in the bar in winter, out on the terrace in summer beside a glorious wisteria.
Richard's food bursts with flavour, so expect to eat well with soft fruits, vegetables and potatoes from the garden in summer and home-laid eggs at breakfast. Read the papers while you start on cereals, nuts and fruit or order a full English made to order using local ingredients.
Walk it off with a stroll along the river Erme which flows along just over the road. Follow it down to the sea and discover sheltered sands at Wonwell.
