An old chapel, smartly and sustainably converted, with a hot tub to soothe tired limbs after country walks through fells and dales

Poised on a hillside within the Bolton Abbey Estate, this 1884 cottage in Gothic Revival style overlooks the rugged Yorkshire Dales. Once a vital community hub, a designer-led revamp has created an upside-down home with downstairs bedrooms and a striking open-plan living space with a vaulted ceiling and arched windows upstairs.

A dual-aspect wood-burner separates the smart kitchen, with a central island, from the cosy seating area, filled with books and games for wet weather days. You can stock up in nearby Skipton and Ilkley, once you've polished off your welcome hamper of local goodies.

Sleep in four-posters in bedrooms lined with rich wallpapers. Three have prettily tiled en suites, the other a private bathroom across the hall; all are stocked with estate smellies and fluffy robes. Windows frame scenic views to set you dreaming of long walks and a country pub at the end – try The Devonshire Arms, also part of the estate.
