Come for big, peaceful bedrooms with views, delicious home cooked breakfasts and riverside strolls through ancient beech woodland

Completed just after WWI for the Shands of Craigellie, this is an elegant house with sash windows, wide wooden doors and high ceilings. Take tea in the large drawing room with comfy sofa and chairs, an open fire, TV, books and games. Eat breakfast at the window: fruits from the farm shop in season, eggs from their hens, porridge, and the full Scottish experience including sausages and black pudding from the local butcher. Or anything you need for a special diet.

A sheltered garden has a handy bench for boots and you're welcome to relax on the lawns with herbaceous beds, or find a sunny corner to read in. Walk down some steps into the Den of Alyth, an SSSI where the Alyth Burn tumbles through. In 20 minutes you are in the little town or can join longer walks.

Bedrooms in the West Wing are both a good size with duck feather and down duvets and Scottish Fine Soaps in sparkling bathrooms with showers.

Craigellie is allegedly the last mansion house built in Scotland. It has huge character and lovely grounds. Guests love the peace and quiet; being in the country; breathing fresh air; listening to birdsong and watching red squirrels playing in the trees.
This area is a hidden gem - it's just 90 minutes north of Edinburgh, yet totally rural in a nice sort of way. You still have your home comforts, Wi-fi and plenty to do, but you have fertile farmland, wooded glens and the great outdoors on your doorstep.
If walking is your thing then you are spoilt for choice: The Cateran Trail, a 103km circular walk through spectacular countryside, passes just above Craigellie, while the scenic Angus glens and the magnificent Cairngorm mountains are all within easy reach.
For golfers there's so much choice: 2 courses in Alyth and 3 championship ones in Blairgowrie. Then there's Forfar, Kirriemuir and Strathmore - and all within 20 miles! Or for cyclists: lazy country lanes; rigorous hills or off-road tracks - take your pick
If you prefer castles, palaces and culture you won't be disappointed. Glamis Castle, Scone Palace and Blair Castle are all nearby. In Dundee the new V&A is worth a visit as are RRS Discovery (think Scott & Shackleton) and the McManus Art Gallery.
Although not coastal it's easy to get to some super east coast beaches, including St Andrews. Then there are numerous less well-known delights from standing stones and hill forts to local museums and a chance to tour a nearby Scottish tea-growing garden.
