An 18th-century coaching inn right in the heart of an old Welsh drovers' town, with award-winning food and the Brecon Beacons rising behind

Walk in with your muddy boots after a day on the hills and nobody will bat an eyelid – this Georgian coaching inn is first and foremost a community local, where farmers, walkers and dogs are as welcome as the overnight guests. A grand central staircase and exposed oak beams speak to the building's age, while the use of reclaimed timber and traditional lime plaster throughout makes it feel warm and never formal.

Six bedrooms upstairs – No.6 is particularly lovely – all made up with soft linens and warm Welsh blankets. Bathrooms are en suite and stocked with lovely things from Myddfai, a social enterprise project based in a village once famous for its physicians and healing herbs.

In the kitchen, Chef Lewis Wilson's fortnightly-changing Modern Welsh menu has deservedly earned two AA Rosettes. There’s an excellent wine list, and a choice of ales brewed in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.

Fiona Evans:

  • A magical walk and one of our favourites is to the Llyn y Fan lake, made famous in the myth 'the lady of the lake' - a stunning glacial lake in the Brecon Beacons.
  • Carreg Cennen Castle - one of many spectacular castles locally - climb up to the castle and explore the deep natural limestone cave - don't forget your torch!
  • Walk down the road and jump on the Heart of Wales railway - taking you through Carmarthenshire, Powys and Shropshire.
  • Once a month there is a farmers' market in village hall selling local produce and crafts - I love a chat and a coffee and one of Gigi's cakes - delicious!
  • We will take you to our secret wild swimming place - if someone else is there we consider it crowded!
  • Try out the new cycle route from nearby town through the Tywi valley to Carmarthen - pop into Aberglasney Gardens or the National Botanic Garden on the way!
