Very high ceilings and large Crittall windows give a spacious, light feel to this long, low building, painstakingly restored. Underfloor heating, an Everhot range and a wood-burner make sure you'll always be warm; on very cold days you can draw wooden shutters over all the windows. When it's balmy you'll fling them open for the heart-warming views of unspoilt countryside and big skies – in spring and early summer there are swathes of wildflowers and orchids.

Through the rooms (there are no doors) you'll find a level of craftmanship, care and detail quite phenomenal, for no reason other than, according to owner William, 'it matters'. Lighting is clever, the bed is bespoke, handcrafted and inviting, the bathroom big and warm with thick towels.

Set off on some magical walks, spot birds and butterflies, have a pint at the Nag's Head in Usk, buy good food at Morris's Farm Shop, feel lucky to return to such a delightful space.
