Originally a British fort and the gateway to northern Spain, where trade ships once paid their toll, today this is a serene riverside retreat wrapped in nature. With just two rooms, it feels wonderfully tranquil and private. Choose a double bedroom in the main house or a separate lodge with an upstairs bedroom overlooking the water.
A full breakfast is served in the dining room. There is a handy communal space with a fridge and microwave, so you can prepare lunches or light suppers and picnic on the hydrangea-lined lawn or beneath one of the many beautiful, mature trees.
Stroll the cobbled streets and waterside restaurants of pretty Bayonne, the capital of the French Basque Country, or venture to vibrant Biarritz. Spain’s San Sebastián (and some wonderful restaurants) is just an hour away, explore nearby Urt or Briscous, or simply lie on a beach and ride the Atlantic waves.
