Traditional beamed cottage, tucked in the hills, with views to distant beaches plus colourful gardens and a pool

Read guest comments

Up, up, up between eucalyptus trees, glimpsing distant Algarve beaches, to your white-washed cottage huddled against the mountains. A wisteria-and-vine-hung terrace sets the tone for this comfortably rustic hideaway: terracotta tiled floors, chestnuts beams, white rough-plaster walls. Rocking chairs cluster around a stone fireplace in the living room while the kitchen  is cheery with Portuguese pottery and a scrubbed dining table. A marble table on the terrace, too, for al fresco eating. There's a little beamed ground-floor bedroom with a pretty view and two rooms upstairs, one (for romantics), light and airy with its own door to the terrace and steps to the garden; perfect for long lazy breakfasts or star-gazing with a drink in hand. There’s a small shower room and larger bathroom to share; white and simple. Plenty to do for the active in and around Monchique - hiking, canoeing, cycling, beaches - and pretty Silves for the curious. Or doze around the pool in the garden, lush with dappled shade and fruit trees; birdsong and crickets the only sounds. You are in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Magical.

Diana Hudson:

  • .Stunning mountain location 35 mins from deserted beaches beaches. Children under 10 have all their activities paid for by us
  • Walk, paint, cycle, spot rare flora and fauna, canoe, write, have your wedding (really you can), snooze, pick flowers, surf, decorate the Christmas tree, snuggle up by the fire, read, all the books, squeeze oranges, chase butterfies. It's all yours...
  • A traditional farmhouse, a cosy family home, big open fire and hayloft, lovingly restored, a labour of love over 31 years. Our visitors book says 'Paradise' 'Heaven' and 'The best holiday, anywhere, ever!' and 'How did all those stars get there'?
  • Complete healthy holiday. Organic food almost impossible to avoid. Produce travels metres not miles; swim in spring water, lie in the garden eating fruit as it drops off the trees; drink wine from the local adega., A massage by the pool maybe.
  • Beachlife is 35 mins away in either direction. Choose from the south coast, small secluded coves and boat trips; spot yachts in the marina, or go west, through foothills and forests for big beaches, national park, spot dolphins and walk the cliff paths.

"Lovely setting, beautiful gardens, welcome pool!"

"Tucked away on a hillside far above the coastal plain, an oasis of calm and relaxation. We had the unusual experience for us of using the open fire in the evenings and relaxing in the pool come the afternoon. Well placed to get to both the south and west coasts. Not a luxury stay except in the sense of well being that crept over us the longer our stay went on. We flew in and out of Lisbon which made for a tough first night (the satnav was a boon) but also allowed us to do a good half day in Lisbon on the way home. A great holiday. "

"Thank you for giving us the perfect place to stay at during these 10 wonderful days. After spending a lot of time in the area, at our own place we were looking for a place that would give us the sane rustical feeling at home. The weather was perfect what a luck so we enjoyed the pool the meals in nature and the beautiful flowers ( f let Amalia know she is doing a such a great job). Thank you so much and let us know in case you want to sell this awesome spot . Best Oranges ever! "

"What a wonderful place! We enjoyed the Quinta da Relva totally and found exactly what we were looking for: tranquility, a beautiful garden with a pool and a very charming house . Everything was just perfect. And how great to wake up to the singing of the birds! Thank you Diana to make this possible and thank you Amalia for bring such a nice housemaid !!! Hope to be back again. "

"We had a fabulous week at the Quinta. It's a stunning location and we really felt relaxed there after a busy year. Our children (8 and 5) were enthralled with the lizards, bats and assortment of unusual bugs in the terraces...and the pool of course. I'd love to go back again next year but for a longer stay. I'm not sure that I'd be able to stay away if I were the owner!! Celine and Anthony"

"We loved our stay at this beautiful rustic retreat. We arrived late at night and woke to birdsong, blue skies and the loveliest view over the garden to the distant sea beyond. The garden, with its stunning pool, fruit trees and flowers, is a little piece of paradise. There’s plenty to see and do in the area – west and south coast beaches, interesting towns, scenic walks, cycling - and a range of simple, local restaurants as well as good amenities in nearby Montchique. If you’re looking for peace and tranquillity away from the summer crowds, this is the perfect escape."

"Lovely characterful villa in a private and peaceful location. Great for walking in the hills of Monchique and a good base for exploring the west or south coasts. Owner very helpful. "

"We arrived following Hurricane Joachin's visit to the region but the house was a most comfortable and hospitable haven from the fog which covered the area for most of the time we were there. The owner arranged car hire and food and a wonderful log fire (endless fuel) on arrival so it is a house that adapts well to a cooler climate. It must be spectacular in the summer with its lovely pool and grounds for adventure and outside dining. The west coast is a short drive for a different climate, delicious and inexpensive fish and fewer tourists. Highly recommended for families."

"We had a lovely relaxing September break here. Truly idyllic location, well hidden in the beautiful hills above Monchique, with distant views of the sea and easily accessible from Faro airport. Great having breakfast and BBQs on gorgeous terraces and star-gazing at night! Plenty to do if you love tranquility, nature, scenic walks and West and South coasts are easy to get to too. The pool was wonderful - we had plenty of chance to lounge and swim in the sun. Inside was clean and rustic with a large selection of books and a cosy open fire for the colder evenings. Would definitely recommend!"

"I want to be back! I loved the walks you can do from the house; the nature and views over Foia are peaceful and incredibly lush . Good memories of Picota, too. Refreshing to be on such beautiful beaches (and in easy reach) without being crowded by tourists, especially on the west coast (Arrifana and Amoriera). Whilst it is advantageous to have a car, walks into Monchique are rewarded with an excellent bakers, regular farmers markets and other local independent businesses. Other towns really worth visiting are Aljezur and Lagos. The characterful and homely villa has the luxury of a pool and garden bursting with life. The three tiled terraces around the villa were great for breakfast in the sunshine or for an aperitif before dinner. And of course, it's a real indulgence to have freshly squeezed orange juice straight from the many citrus trees in the garden. "

"We have lost count now of the number of visits to Quinta da Relva and it never fails to please. Situated away from it all in the hills of Monchique this lovely farmhouse is all we need for peace & tranquility & just a 10 minute walk away from the informal restaurant "Rampa" who serve the best chicken piri piri served by the lovely friendly owners! Our days were spent either lazing in the sunshine around the pool area ,driving to the West coast beaches, our favourite being Amoreira and sometimes in an evening having a cocktail in either Monchique or Caldas de Monchique. We will not hesitate to book this again when time allows us to escape. "

"It really is something quite special, from the amazing wisteria, the inviting pool, finding hidden corners in the grounds to the growing sense of tranquility we felt during the week. The car hire company that was recommended was great- pick up was smooth and it was a very easy journey to get there. Having groceries in (as pre-arranged when we booked) was lovely and a great welcome. We visited the fantastic beaches on the west and south coast and enjoyed exploring on quiet roads and in local towns. We had a great day with Lucio from Alternativ Tours- hike to the Foia peak, 32 km bike ride downhill then into canoes and a swim. Everything in the house was in good order and the maid kept it nice and clean. There was a wide choice of local restaurants: good piri piri chicken was easy to find. We were very grateful to the agents for printing out our boarding cards on Easter Friday - everyone concerned with the cottage has been very supportive. As a place to both get away yet still have access to Algarve's natural attractions, this place was wonderful. "

"Peaceful location on a large site with only the sound of the birds. Lovely house with cosy rustic character- spent the days relaxing by the pool and the evenings cosy beside the log fire, with plentiful firewood supplied. Comfy beds, loved all the little nooks in the garden where I could relax and read or crochet. Our favourite thing was squeezing oranges from the trees beside the pool, for breakfast. Short walk to A Rampa restaurant for great piri piri chicken and short drive to O Luar Du Foia where we enjoyed fantastic food at a reasonable price. Trips to the West Coast beaches, to Alvor and Lagos were only about half an hour away. The house, its large site and location with wonderful views just made our holiday so special and we hope to return soon."

"Our family came to Quinta da Relva for Christmas. We were greeted by a Christmas tree and a huge open log fire The colourful garden is welcoming, and this immediately gives you the impression that you will perfectly relax there. Not only that, despite winter time we had plenty of colourful spots from the garden but also orange and mandarin trees had plenty of fruits. Our young children loved collecting them in the morning for the breakfast juices. There is no disappointment to expect, the description is truthful and in any event the contact point in Monchique is very helpful and swift in reacting. The property is very clean: a caretaker comes 3 times a week which is very helpful. Don't worry she will work without disturbing you if you stay at home while she washes and tidies up. We have enjoyed walking in the mountain: Foia and Picota, which is probably easier in Winter than in Summer. Also the beaches (South and West), are not far (30 km). In Winter you will go there more for playing than for bathing but you will enjoy the space!"
