A 200 year old typical Mallorcan house with wooden beams, tiled floors, a view-filled garden and a big pool just on the outskirts of Sóller

The position is perfect: from the garden the views of the mountains (Sierra Tramuntana) are gorgeous, especially at sunset. The town is a six-minute walk downhill for a good bakery, wet fish shop and the Sóller Cooperative - one of the oldest in Spain and with excellent supplies. The main square is a bit touristy but if you walk down the side streets you'll find lovely bars and tapas places that are quieter and more authentic.

There's plenty of space indoors with two living rooms, one with a wood-burning stove and both with big windows overlooking the garden so even in bad weather you'll feel part of the lush outdoors; mostly you'll be based on the terrace with its fabulous views or lazing around the saltwater pool which is big enough for proper swimming.

The kitchen opens onto the terrace and you also get a handy extra fridge. Lovely to stock up with local food and eat watching the sun sink below the rocky horizon. It's peaceful here.

  • Soller and the Tramuntana Valley are worth visiting throughout the year: for walking, hiking and relaxing in the spring and autumn, and for a character-filled sunshine holiday in the summer, and the house is comfortable all year round.
  • Soller is filled with interesting architecture, from the exuberant Gaudi-inspired church and bank in the square to the fin de siecle mansions of the Soller orange and cloth merchants, and the fincas on the outskirts of the town.
  • From the house, walk up the hill past the cemetery to the Three Crosses monument from where you will get amazing views of the entire town, the valley, the mountains which encircle it, the port, the lighthouse and the Mediterranean beyond.
  • As always, the most interesting places, shops, bars and cafés are just off the beaten track, close to but not in the main square and the main shopping street, the Calle de la Luna. These are worth visiting, but you will be rewarded by going further.
  • The train to Palma is a busy tourist attraction, but it's a good way to see the Soller Valley and the mountain scenery. Soller station has a permanent exhibition of Miro and Picasso ceramics, with free entry, and the station itself is impressive.
