A charming comfy cottage with wood burner, delicious hilly views, walks radiating from the door. We didn’t want to leave!

Read guest comments

Our inspector was reluctant to leave: so charming is the conversion and so stunning is the setting. Only the grey stone exterior belies its 19th-century laundry origins; inside all is light and airy in the spacious open-plan kitchen/diner/living room. The vaulted ceiling soars, original and new beams marry well, thick stone walls set off local artworks. This is a friendly comfy space: whip up meals in the modern kitchen, dine at the farmhouse table, unbend on squashy sofas in front of the wood-burner (first basket of logs free), drink in the hilly views. Bedrooms (all on the ground floor) are calm and uncluttered with deep windows framing more long views; contemporary bathrooms sparkle. Outside there's a terrace for barbecues, a wildflower meadow, and a pond teeming with wildlife (watch small children). Delightful owners – who also let out the farmhouse next door, otherwise you have the place to yourself – leave cake and bubbles in the kitchen; Selkirk is close for supplies. You're in border country so lovers of outdoor pursuits will be in clover: horse-riding, golf, fishing... biking and hiking from the door too.

  • Have picnics and wallow in the Ettrick Water counting the salmon or watch quietly as the otters play.
  • Stroll down to the village for a pint of real ale, a large selection of whiskey, juke box and games in our traditional local pub serving hearty home cooked meals.
  • Follow in the footsteps of Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg the Ettrick Shepherd and explore the literary wilds of St Marys Loch, the Devils Beef Tub and Grey Mares Tail.
  • Bring your rackets and balls for a good game of tennis on the smart new village court, followed by a refreshing long drink in The Cross Keys.
  • Relax as the children go wild following trails and playing in the adventure park at nearby Bowhill, home of the Duke of Buccleuch.

"We're a family of 4 with a small dog and just had a wonderful week at Laundry Cottage in Ettrick Bridge. The cottage is fab, well equipped, lovely decor and in a beautiful location. The beds were very comfortable, important to those with bad backs. Perfect hosts, unobtrusive but close to hand if needed (happy to lend hand blender for soup making). We joined in the local pub quiz one night and found the locals very warm and friendly, we even won a bonus prize! The area is stunning and great for exploring, we also managed a trip up to Edinburgh with Louisa's help on the best way to get there."

"A beautiful cottage in a stunning and tranquil setting. Well equipped and well furnished for a comfortable self-catering holiday. Ideal for exploring the Ettrick Valley and near enough to Edinburgh to visit for a day trip. Definitely highly recommended!"

" Just back from a fantastic two week visit in Scotland at the end of which we spent four days at the Laundry Cottage on Howford Farm in Ettrickbridge in the Scottish Borders. Our family group of four had plenty of room to spread out in the three bedroom cottage looking out at beautiful new mown farm fields and the farm house and buildings nearby. Lovely decor, an excellent wood burning stove (which we used in july!), a well equipped kitchen, luxurious linens and comfortable furniture all were enjoyed thoroughly. A short walk to the village and pub and great walks were a bonus, too!"

"I'm not normally very good at doing nothing, but I could have stayed sitting on the terrace at Laundry Cottage in the warm sunshine, drinking in nothing more than the wonderful serene landscape, for a lifetime. The cottage is immaculate and very well equipped, as well as beautifully decorated, light and spacious. The area is what the Lake District must have been like when Arthur Ransome was a boy: breath-takingly beautiful and gloriously, heart-singingly, empty."

"Fantastic holiday property - a beautifully decorated and well thought out cottage in lovely surroundings and perfect for our party of four. Really appreciated the small touches like delicious homemade cake when we arrived and two baskets of toys that our two year old little boy loved playing with. A very scenic area - incredibly peaceful but a good base for exploring the Borders - we had a day in Edinburgh, trip to Lindisfarne and lovely walks in the local area and around historic properties, but lots more to see next time too. Would love to come again."

"A beautifully decorated and maintained cottage with all of the amenities needed for a restful weekend. The welcome bottle of prosecco was a lovely touch. Whether for a couple or a larger group, I cannot recommend Laundry Cottage enough if you are looking for a rural get away in beautiful surroundings."
