Arrive after dark and the building glows above the treeline, a vast timbered silhouette that once greeted Queen Victoria's carriage. The bar buzzes – purple panelled walls, curved leather benches, low lamps; locals catching up and hikers relaxing after a day of walking.
Eat in the dining room among book-lined shelves, or take a table in the tiled Forest Room beneath a beautiful mural. By day, pick a suntrap terrace out front or a quieter deck for evening light. Raymond Blanc's kitchen turns out seasonal plates with flair.
Head up the stained-glass stairwell to bed. Rooms range from snug retreats to Luxe suites, where roll-top baths sit beneath preserved leaded windows framing the treetops. Two special bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling carved wooden fireplaces, complete with painted panels that lay hidden behind plasterboard for decades. Beds are dressed in fine linen, pillows spritzed with Bramley spray for a good night's sleep.
