Step through the old stone archway into a cobbled courtyard, where hanging baskets soften the ancient brick. Inside, low oak beams and a roaring fire set the tone in a bar that's properly local – order a pint of Shere Drop, brewed in the Surrey Hills, and settle into a wing chair by the flames. Dickens is said to have written his first novel here; you half expect Mr Pickwick at the next table.
Rooms are scattered across the main inn and surrounding buildings around the courtyard – climb creaking stairs past black timbers and deep red walls to find yours, from cosy doubles to Really Fancy rooms with baths. Enjoy tea and coffee and a stash of baked treats – a sweet welcome before you've even unpacked.
Out back and tucked away from the High Street, there's a sheltered courtyard garden for al fresco meals. Dogs are properly pampered here, with a dog menu, a goodie bag and a bath for muddy paws after your walk.
