Wind through woods to discover a world of earthy smells, apricot orchards, and neatly stacked bales of hay. As you’re ferried up the hills in Barbialla’s dusty 4x4, the views are thrilling and wide.
Set far apart, these rustic-chic farmhouse apartments are cool in summer and cosy in winter. Le Trosce (sleeps 8-10) is for one single group. Doderi’s garden includes a small house for two, and Brentina lies deep in the woods. All have access to a lovely pool. Find a fishing lake, a small farm shop, and cows on the hills – or in pristine stalls.
Join the pigs foraging in the cool shade of the woods. Head off to San Gimignano, Volterra, Florence. This part of Tuscany is less known than others, yet is every bit as beautiful. Hilltop Montaione is 8km; Palaia and Castelfiorentino are further. All have amazing farmers' markets.
