At the top of Burford’s famous high street, this cracking pub has 16 smartly decorated rooms sized from cosy “snugs” to generous suites, all with lofty ceilings and comfy beds, plush carpets, crisp linens and colourful cushions. The 18th-century building is listed – there are stacks of original features still in evidence, from gorgeous archways and wooden doors in the bar area to quirky wall sculptures (gargoyles, too).
Downstairs are two dining areas: a smarter restaurant for long, leisurely dinners and a relaxed bar area with squashy leather sofas and a real fire – perfect for a pint and a chat. There’s a piano and daily newspapers, books, games, and walking guides to inspire you.
Food is fresh and local; breakfasts are as healthy or hearty as you like. Chef specials depend on what the butcher and fishmonger bring, while behind the bar you’ve got a choice of Butcombe’s award-winning beers.
