An inspired collision of industrial Victorian chic and elegant Georgian architecture cuts a dash in an old Bristol square and will surely become an iconic landmark for the city. Stay in rooms which veer from small and deeply funky to downright movie-star special. All have bold, bright art and upcycled, vintage finds. Steam in a copper bath and loll about in robes while you tackle some toothsome treats from the mini-bar and beer, wine and gin from down the road.

The library with crackling fire is a grand place for a prolonged breakfast: pastries and fresh bread from Hobbs House, fruits and yogurt, charcuterie and Wookey Hole Cheddar plus an omelette station. A knock-out geometrically designed Rose Vickers presides. The other half of the ground floor will open soon.

Explore independent shops on mutinous Stokes Croft, find good food on the harbourside, puff or bus up the hill to Clifton for cafés, smart shops and the bridge.

Walk 20 minutes to the harbourside to soak up the atmosphere at weekends or on sunny days, then wander round to Wapping Wharf for a bite to eat from one of the many eateries housed in shipping containers beside the water.
Leafy Portland Square is also home to Bristol's circus school - Circomedia - where you can try out classes in trapeze, aerial hoop and more.
