Just a few miles from Oxford, this thatched and beamed building is filled with original art and a bit of neon thrown in for good measure. An open fire crackles in the well-stocked bar on chilly days – sip a pint of something delicious from Hook Norton Brewery while you check out the menu. It's mercifully short and Head Chef Jose turns out pub classics beautifully with a few surprises and glorious puddings.
Bedrooms have the most gorgeous cottons and linens, clouds of goose down, fluffy robes, mini-bars and treats. Wake to a full English in the dining room or out on the terrace if it's warm. The coffee is good and strong, there are pancakes, smashed avocados on sourdough and good homemade granola with fruits and yogurt. Set off on oodles of footpaths from the door, visit the church with medieval wall paintings in the village.
Head for the bar after a day of exploring or walking, sit in the garden, relish the peace.
