Ask about the name and you'll get a good story: this stretch of countryside played a curious part in the Second World War when the fields were part of a network of decoy sites built to lure enemy bombers from real targets – a scrap of history the pub now quietly celebrates.

Inside, log burners, antique furniture and low beams strung with hops sit alongside colourful modern touches – fat cushions, eclectic art and jugs of fresh flowers on old dining tables. Upstairs, eight bedrooms mix compact king rooms with roomier super-kings, each with en suite bathrooms, excellent linens and eye-catching fabric headboards, homemade biscuits and a Roberts radio tuned to Classic FM on arrival.

Downstairs, the kitchen turns out seasonal Hampshire produce — handmade pies, Sunday roasts and wood-fired pizza — best enjoyed with one of the real ales. Out back, a sheltered terrace with an olive tree and pots of rosemary is made for a leisurely lunch.
